Perry Speaks

We recently spoke to Perry Kow, guitarist of SoulCheq to get his view of experiences in the recent trip to the Philippines.

1. What did you expect out of the trip?
Well it was my first time being on a Mission Trip, so I didn't really know what to expect. But one thing I'm certain I did expect though, and that's to see with ma own eyes how God was going to move in the place we went, Tacloban - to see how God was going to move among the Christian community & as well as among us in the Mission team. I've been hearing lots of testimonies and stories about how God moved among villagers & how much impact there was to the lives of those who went for mission trips...so yeah, I wanted to see & experience that myself. Oh, and of course expected to have a good time playing together with the band members that are also the dudes from the same Youth Group back in Penang...

2. Were your expectations met?
I'd reply with a big YES!.....the experience was Great!!......the Taclobanians were so responsive to almost everything we did there, despite the fact that we are foreigners...they were very opened to us, opened to the gospel, the music and also to the altar call!.. I tell you, the rest will be able to agree, we accomplished what we were there for - to win souls for Christ! most of them in the crowd, children, men and women, and even homeless men...man, responded when the altar call was given. God did move in Tacloban!
Had a great time making noise with our gears...in the market place..how awesome is that?!..there were some glitches in between but hey, who cares?...it's the good times that matter..

3. What was the single most memorable moment of your trip?
Tacloban - City - Jail. The name of the place explains best....how often do we get a chance to be inside a jail?....The few hours being part of an evangelistic team to prisoners must be the most memorable moment of the trip...Tells you only 1 thing...Our God is no respector of person. Side track..the ppl inside the jail..their looks, the way they carry themselves...are no way close to hostile...we must have visited a jail for 'petty crimes'..if there's such words...

4. How has the trip changed you?
A person with less money in my wallet for a few months...hah..just kidding..just kidding..but it's worth it anyway, some of the experience gained, ppl met and things saw are not measurable and bought using money...you just have to be there...n So, seriously, I've learnt to see things and see life differently..more different than usual at least. You learn to be grateful for what you have..

I shared this during the youth meeting when we were back in Penang, that we ought to be grateful for the convenience & comfort we enjoy in our church..what do we have? Air conditioning, soft comfy chairs and carperts..complete sets of intruments & sound system for P&W in church..what do they have there? Table fans, cement floors, ragged walls, a humble sound system and a box guitar. What a gap! But the good similarity is we do worship the same God.",Had a great time making noise with our gears...in the market place..how awesome is that?!..there were some glitches in between but hey, who cares?...it's the good times that matter..

5. Tell us something funny that happened in the trip?
Is losing my mobile phone something funny?..i guess not...=\ mmm.. can't really think of something particularly funny which happened during the trip...OH YES...Clinton's FAN(S)!!.... That's not something funny that happened..but rather, someone funny we met....i'll just leave the priviledge of explaining to Clinton. I guess that's about it..yeah.

6. So when are you going back?
Soon as I am capable of doing so I hope, depending of work leaves and financially.. Hope I'll be even more ready (not in terms of the above 2 factors, but others) the next time I go...like the idea of believers from different nations being in one place having the same motive - to win souls.!

Daniel Said

We recently caught up with Daniel, the drummer of SoulCheq and this is what he had to say about the recent trip to Philippines.

Was it everything you expected?
Not fully but... yes..it was a great exprience for that week. Its about making friends, building relationships through the music.

What was your most memorable moment during the trip?
Meeting snowy and getting to take close up pictures of him. No.. kiddin. just having the chance to see and meet new friends was the most memorable one.

Did anything you experienced change you?
Yes of cause. Changed me a bit in more loving and giving towards the society and stop worrying about what I am going to eat tomorrow!

So would you go again?
If the people in Philipines wants me to visit them again, of cause i will shop up with a better drum kit and a better thundering sound.

Thrilla in Manila!

It has been a truly awesome time in Philippines and there is neither enough space nor words to describe fully the time the guys had over in Tacloban City.

So here are some pics to tell the story:

The 10 days we spent there saw us have the opportunity to minister to the Tacloban City Jail, outreach in La Paz, enjoying the traffic in Manila and swimming in Dulag.

From mango shakes at Tacloban City, hanging on the back of jeepneys in Palo to playing in Pastrana it was a truly memorable time for all of us.

God is truly great as we saw hundreds of people make decisions to accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. The Philippinos are truly the most hospitable and friendly people I have met anywhere in the world. I was encouraged to meet so many of them as they welcomed us into their home.

Special mention and thanks to Ps Mark, Ps Wayne & Rosie, Munching, Edgar, Ps Carlos, Ps Steve, Jimmy the Chef and Snowy for their help, prayer and support.

We plan to return to Philippines in the future for what was definitely an experience to remember! We'll be back...

Mission Phili

It's finally confirmed, SC will be in Philippines from April to May 2006!

As part of the missions crew with Ps Jim McLaughlin of Hope Christian Church Gold Coast, the guys will be playing at 2 night youth rallies in Palo and 2 more nights of street stage crusades in Taft. There are plans to plant churches in either Lapaz or McArthur plus visit and help in anyway the victims of the recent landslide near St. Bernard.

Dates will be confirmed soon, but what is confirmed is that SC will be based firstly in Manila and then Tacloban City.

Let's pray and intercede for the 12 (and counting) people confirmed for the trip from 27 April to 10 May 2006. Finance, time off from work, weather, safety, health and of course for God's anointing!

We believe for a great move of God, salvation for the lost and healing for the sick. So if you know family and friends in the Philippines keep a watch out of dates and venues so you can invite them and their friends.

Let His name be made famous!

IGNITE - Into God Nite

SoulCheq @ IGNITE

SATURDAY, 21st January 2006 - The youth of Penang First came together for a night of high praise, deeper worship and passionate prayer. While just under 100 youth made their way ino the HUNZA Auditorium, the youth band opened up the night with bang via (a falling bass amp...haha) and a couple of songs (All Day and a number by Altered Frequency).

After some interactive games by Sabrina Foo, SC led worship with some members of the youth band. There were 2 sessions with prayer after each session.

The SetList was:

1st Session
1. Free
2. One way
3. One (U.I.C.)
4. Rain Down
5. Give us Clean Hands

2nd Session
1. Tell the World
2. God is Moving
3. Take Me In
4. To the Ends of the Earth

It was such an awesome atmosphere as the youth jumped and shouted their hearts out, worshipped intimately and were active in interceding for their leaders, church, state and nation.

IGNITE is the first of a series of monthly youth worship and prayer nights at Penang First AOG, purposed to ignite and birth a passion within the youth to worship and passionately for people beyond themselves; To catch hold of a vision larger than their surroundings and step out and reach their community.

Thanks to Ps Wai Fong and team for making this awesome night possible. We were truly blessed!

To God be the glory... we're on the brink!!!

Cheq-in out ... cya at the next IGNITE in March!!!

SoulCheq @ WatchNite 05

Hey folks

Happy and blessed New Year!!! Welcome to 2006!!!

SoulCheq had the honour of playing 2 songs for the first time at Penang First AOG's WatchNite Service. This is an annual event to thank God for the year just passed as well as pray for and welcome in the brand new year.

SC did a cover of Majesty (Delirious) and ONE (U.I.C.). It was a wonder to witness the crowd of 1,500 worship and intercede in unity.

Ps Abel Thomas brought the word and then at 11.59 Ps Marcus Tan led the congregation to a countdown... 10... 9... 8... ...3 ...2 ...1 and before you know it... Welcome 2006!!!

We have a couple of people we would like to thank for their contributions - Sara Ooi for lending her vocals, Sally Lim on the synth & vocals, Esther Choong on keys and Thomson on bass, Jarold & Kee Leng for the sound and of course Ps Marcus and PFAOG for the opportunity to minister to the people. We love you all gang.

Not Another Random Wednesday

Soulcheq played a set at the first nite of the ALL EYES ON FREES Concert at Penang Free School.

SC was not their usual 100% complete self bcoz Perry our rhythm guitarist could not make it due to personal commitments. We hope have Perry back with us soon.

Nonetheless the four (Alvin, Dan, Kenny & Clint) did their best to rock up the crowd. SC started their set with a cover of Foo Fighter's Best of You - that really got the hall shaking. Next the guys performed their originally written and composed number entitled You Walked. Finally the guys hit the groove with Back To You by John Mayer.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying nite as the guys just found out about this opportunity last week and got together to work on it recently.

All the bands and dancers were awesome!!! Big shout out goes out to M.A.D. - the Music and Drama Soceity of Penang Free School for putting on a great nite!!!

Love out!!!

God is Real !!!

Youth Alive Gold Coast, Australia Report

Hey Gang,

I just experienced an awesome encounter in the presence of God tonight, it's got me pumped and I gotta share it right now! The Youth Alive QLD Band rocked the house, and hundreds of youth in Gold Coast, Australia responded to God as Mike Gugliemucci from PlanetShakers shared such an impacting word...

...about how we can't really experience God by just knowing about God, hanging around God or His people - we need to TASTE GOD'S PRESENCE. Just like a Big Mac we can't satisfy our hunger if we just know about it, hang around it or smell it. We need to TASTE it!!!

So... I wanna encourage you, whereva you are, whateva yer doing:
Taste God's Presence Today!!!
Make Him Real in Your Life Today!!!

Bless ya all ... Love out!

B.I.G. Success

Hey Gang,

Hope everything is well in all your endeavours...

We're glad to report that The B.I.G. Show (Believe In Giving, Believe In God) was a BIG SUCCESS!!!

77 people turn up for the event yes-day evening, which was beyond our expectation. (Thank You Ps Wai Fong for your faithmore attitude!!!)

After feasting on fingerfood for 1/2 hour the event kicked off at 5pm. SoulCheq opened with a funk rendition of My Redeemer Lives, which was a hit with the enthusiastic crowd. Then SC performed their original number ONE (United In Christ), a song which urged the crowd to be united in voice and spirit; for where there is unity, there is power. ONE really pumped up the crowd and got them amped.

For the last order of the night, our head ushers Sabrina, Michelle & Jolene joyfully informed the crowd that we collected a total of RM399.50 for the Tsunami Victims Fund. All glory to God!!!

There were people of all factions and groups including The B.B. - Boys Brigade, C.A. - Christ Ambassadors, YAS - Young Adult Service & the Penang First Pastoral & Admin Staff, friends & family were all on hand to offer their support in voice, presence & finance.

Thanks also go out to Arden & Andy of Xtrix Media who helped us with sound & visual.

The vision of The B.I.G. Show would never have become a reality without your support in prayer & in action. Thank you once more!!!

Foremost & notwithstanding All Glory & All Praise must go to our God & Saviour, Jesus Christ, who is so faithful and has come through for us yet again. Praise Him!!!

P.S.: Photos for the event will be published a.s.a.practicable. So stay tuned...

Love out!!!
